Braelossie Hotel, Sheriffmill Road, Elgin

The Braelossie Hotel, located on Sheriffmill Road in Elgin, is a Scots Baronial villa designed by A and W Reid and Mackenzie between 1862 and 1863. The building features coursed rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings, creating a large asymmetrical two-storey structure.

On the west elevation, there is a prominent three-storey tower at the center topped with a pyramidal roof that has contrasting slating and a cast-iron finial. This elevation also includes an eaves course and pedimented dormers. To the southwest, an ashlar pilastered portico displays some vermiculated rustication and round-headed arches with keystones on the west and south sides, now fitted with glazed doors.

The north elevation consists of three bays, with the eastern bay projecting and gabled, featuring a five-sided ground floor bay window and a turret at the re-entrant angle. The east elevation includes a projecting rectangular bay and turret.

Throughout the building, there are two- and four-pane sash windows, with pedimented windows on the first floor that have gablets breaking the wallhead. The structure is adorned with crowstepped gables and corniced ashlar chimneys set diagonally at the ridge and gables in pairs, including one battery of five. The roof is finished with slate.
