Description
Auldtown Of Netherdale is a villa built in 1853 by A and W Reid of Elgin. It is a single-storey, five-bay structure with a raised basement, situated on a slope that falls to the southwest. The exterior is harled, featuring Turriff sandstone dressings, including a base course, band course, cornice, and consoled corners. The principal floor has tall windows with recessed aprons.
On the northeast elevation, there is a pedimented Roman Doric ashlar portico at the center, which is distyle in antis and has a bracketed cornice. The entrance features a four-panelled door within a tripartite surround, topped by a rectangular plate glass fanlight, with windows on either side. An ashlar coped retaining wall leads to the basement.
The southwest elevation is three bays wide, with a prominent two-storey canted window at the center set within a broad, advanced panel, and additional windows in the outer bays. The southeast elevation also has three bays, featuring an advanced, two-storey, four-light window projection at the center, with windows in the outer bays. The northwest elevation is similarly three bays wide, with regular fenestration; the central bay is advanced and piended, with windows that return to the basement. There is a service court adjoining the basement, which includes single-storey outbuildings and a curtain wall with a round-headed niche facing the southwest garden. The principal floor is fitted with sash and case windows that have a four-pane glazing pattern, while the basement features lying-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a piended M-roof with a cupola, along with corniced ashlar stacks, some of which are missing their cans.
Inside, the hall is illuminated by the cupola and features a cornice and a Greek Key frieze, along with a coved, panelled ceiling. The interior includes archways with consoled jambs and four-panelled doors set in recessed panelled doorcases.
To the west of the villa is a coachhouse, which is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a piended roof, constructed from similar materials. It has two broad coach openings at the ground level with doors, flanked by windows, and three windows on the first-floor loft.
