Description
The Kennels and Kennel Cottage at the Altyre Estate were designed by A and W Reid in 1899. The Kennels feature a two-storey, three-bay central block that faces east, with single-storey wings set back at the north and south gables. The building is constructed from harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. It has a central door flanked by windows, with kennels located in the outer bays and a single first-floor bipartite window. The yard is enclosed by a low coped rubble wall topped with high cast-iron railings. The west elevation also has ground and first-floor bipartites, and a projecting stairwell is encased by single-storey additions at the north gable. The windows feature 4-pane glazing, and the building has a central coped ridge stack with piended slate roofs, which are bellcast on the central block.
Inside, the west-facing domestic quarters consist of three rooms, and the kennels include a 'sick bay' for ill dogs.
The Kennels Cottage, also known as the Keeper's House, was built between 1860 and 1870, with additions by A and W Reid in 1899. This single-storey and attic cottage has three bays and is similarly constructed from harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The central door is sheltered by a rustic gabled porch, and there are gable dormers, possibly from 1899, in the outer bays. The first floor of the gables features blind windows, and the cottage has 4-pane glazing. It has coped end stacks and a slate roof with projecting eaves.
