Description
The Kennels and Kennel Master's House at Duns Castle Estate date from the later 19th century and have undergone some alterations. The single-storey, three-bay kennel master's house is constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble, featuring polished ashlar and some rendered dressings. To the northwest, there is a single-storey, rectangular-planned small kennel made of sandstone and whinstone rubble. The forecourt is enclosed by a rubble wall with vermiculated dressings, complemented by cast-iron gates and railings. Additionally, there is a rubble water tank with a coped, round-arched design set in a raised reservoir, which has a small boarded door.
On the southeast elevation of the house, there are three steps leading to a deep-set glazed panelled door in the center, topped with a rectangular plate glass fanlight. To the right, there is a bipartite window, while the left bay is advanced and gabled, featuring a canted window with a half-piended slate roof. The northwest elevation has four bays, with a modern lean-to porch added to the outer left and another lean-to addition to the outer right. Each of the inner bays has a window, and there are gables above each two-bay group.
The windows throughout the house are timber sash and case, with four panes in the upper section and two panes in the lower section. The roof is slate, showcasing exposed rafters and a timber eaves board, along with terracotta ridge tiles and finials. Rendered stacks are also present.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1995.
The kennels are symmetrical and consist of four bays, with a door to each inner bay and a rectangular fanlight above each door. They feature a slate piended roof and windows at the eaves of the outer bays. An outbuilding to the west is made of timber and has a corrugated iron roof.
