2 Pavilion Lodge, Duns Castle

1 Pavilion Lodge at Duns Castle was built between 1774 and 1777 as a symmetrical Gothic lodge house featuring two towers flanking the road. It has a pointed-arched crenellated gateway that spans the road. The building is constructed of droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, while the rear elevation is made of rubble. There is a later single-storey harled addition to the rear of the south lodge and a rubble addition to the rear of the north lodge.

The east elevation has five bays, with a full-height two-storey pointed-arch gateway in the center. Each side features a round tower with a square base at ground level, pointed-arch windows in the inner bays, and a boarded door with a pointed-arch doorpiece. The upper sections of both inner and outer bays are blinded. Each tower has a window at the first floor (blinded at the upper pointed section) and a second-floor window (also blinded). The screen walls on either side are slightly set back and have Gothick panelled piers flanking openings, which are now bricked to the south and half-filled with sandstone to the north. Each pier is topped with a moulded coping stone, and there is a coped wall with a boarded door on the outer side.

The west elevation is similar to the east elevation but has rubble at the ground level and lacks machicolations. It features pointed-arch hoodmoulded windows at the ground level of each lodge, both blinded at the upper arched section, as well as blinded pointed-arch hoodmoulded windows on each storey above. There is also a window in the sandstone addition at the rear of the north lodge.

The south elevation has a square-headed window with a hoodmould at the first floor and a point-arched hoodmoulded window at the second floor, which may be blinded. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The rear additions to each lodge have a monopitch roof. The interior has not been seen.
