Description

The stables at Altyre House, designed by John Kinross and dated 1902, consist of a single storey and loft, along with a two-storey courtyard stable, carriage house, and dwelling range. The building features a small U-shaped courtyard at the northeast. It is constructed of random rubble with contrasting finely tooled and polished ashlar dressings. The west elevation has a central round-headed ribbed entrance arch with a hoodmould, flanked on the left by a four-bay stable block and on the right by an asymmetrical three-bay dwelling that includes a gabled wallhead bipartite, which is adorned with a decorative carved datestone.

The south-facing elevation is symmetrical with ten bays and features gabled end bays that are raised to two storeys. An irregular gabled two-storey house projects from the northeast, featuring a north entrance gable and a small courtyard with an east entrance flanked by square tooled ashlar gatepiers topped with stepped pyramidal caps. A two-storey stair turret with a bellcast conical slated roof projects from the north elevation.

Inside the courtyard, which is linked by a passage to the northeast court, there are doorways leading to the stables and dwellings. The east and south ranges have wide entrances to former carriage houses, now closed off by large windows with joggled lintels. The building is richly decorated with discreet carvings on gabletted wallhead dormers, often featuring stepped and moulded detailing at the wallhead, along with monogrammed plaques and coats of arms. The doorways and window openings are highlighted with roll moulding. The building includes double and single oak doors with wrought-iron furniture and multi-pane glazing. A square leaded louvred ridge cupola and moulded coped ridge stacks complement the stone slate roofs.
