Description

The kennels, along with an ancillary structure, date from the earlier 19th century and have undergone later alterations and additions, with refurbishment in the late 20th century. The main kennel building is a single-story, 5-bay rectangular cottage with a gabled bay projecting centrally, and a further gabled wing at the rear creating a near-L-shaped layout. The front is built of squared and snecked, tooled cream sandstone rubble, while the rear and sides use harl-pointed rubble with droved sandstone dressings. The building features crowstepped gables, droved rubble quoins, and droved long and short surrounds to the windows, with projecting cills, and small-pane glazing in modern doors. A single-story, 4-bay rectangular ancillary structure, used in part as kennels, sits to the southeast, with a railed enclosure to the northwest.

The southeast-facing elevation features a projecting crowstepped bay at the centre, with an advanced 3-light window at ground level, flanked by narrow side-lights. A bipartite window is centred under the surmounting gablehead stack. Single doors are recessed to the left and right, each with a 3-pane fanlight, and single windows are situated in the bays to the outer left and right. The northeast-facing side elevation showcases a crowstepped wing to the outer left, with a single door at ground level and a window aligned beneath a gablehead stack. A recessed wing to the right has a single window centred at ground level. The northwest-facing rear elevation is largely blank on the projecting wing's left bay. The recessed wing to the right has a single door in the outer right bay and single windows in the remaining three bays to the left.

The windows are timber sash and case with 4-, 8- and 12-pane glazing, and there are modern skylights. The roof is covered in grey slate with crowstepped skews and beak skewputts. Sandstone, rendered, and brick gablehead stacks are present on the southeast, northeast, northwest, and southwest corners, predominantly topped with octagonal cans.

The interior was refurbished in 1998 and is not currently visible.

The ancillary structure is constructed of harl-pointed sandstone rubble with droved rubble dressings. The southwest-facing elevation features an off-centre sliding boarded timber garage door to the right, and a single window to the outer right. An off-centre boarded timber door is found to the left, with a single window in the bay to the left. A low coped wall with intersecting hooped iron railings adjoins the outer left side, enclosing a segregated exercise area, which was formerly kennels. The ancillary structure has timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, a replacement roof, a red brick apex stack to the north, and a single circular can. The interior of the ancillary structure was also refurbished in 1998 and is not visible.
