Description
East Lodge at Swinton House is a mid-19th century gate lodge with a later addition. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure in an L-shape, featuring a flat-roofed addition at the rear. The building is constructed from harl-pointed red sandstone rubble, with some squared sections, and has droved sandstone dressings. The rear addition is rendered. The eaves are supported by stone corbels, and the building includes droved quoins and surrounds for the depressed-arched, chamfered openings, as well as chamfered cills and sandstone mullions.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a projecting gabled porch offset to the right of center, featuring a depressed-arched opening beneath the apex. The porch contains a boarded timber door that is recessed, along with a letterbox fanlight above it. There are single windows in the flanking returns, and bipartite windows in the outer left and right bays.
The northeast (side) elevation has a gabled bay that advances to the outer left, with a central four-light canted window. There is a bipartite window in the bay recessed to the outer right.
The northwest (rear) elevation features a blind elevation to the projecting wing on the outer left. The wing is recessed to the right and includes a single window in the bay to the left, while a modern addition obscures the remaining bays to the right.
The southwest (side) elevation is also a blind elevation. The windows predominantly feature plate glass in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes timber bargeboards and moulded skewputts. There are stepped and corniced rendered ridge and apex stacks with various octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
