Description
The site includes a walled garden dating primarily from the earlier 19th century, with later alterations. The garden is near rectangular in plan, covering approximately 10,000 square metres, and is tiered. A central sandstone staircase provides access to the upper terrace, running along a central axis aligned with the front of Swinton House. The garden is enclosed by predominantly rubble walls with stone coping. Some sections of the walls have red brick linings, although these are heavily rendered. Decorative details include a pointed arched opening in the west wall, which is now blocked.
Flanking the entrance in the south wall are square-plan rusticated sandstone ashlar piers with ball finials and corniced caps; the original gates are now missing. Further square-plan, tooled sandstone piers with ball-finialed pyramidal caps enclose an outer court, along with decorative wrought-iron gates.
A timber-framed greenhouse range is positioned to the southeast, comprising a 10-bay rectangular wing and a taller, near-square block. The base is of brick, and it originally featured plate glass panels, many of which are now missing or broken. Decorative iron detailing is present on the ridge and finials. Inside, a central walkway is flanked by planting beds. Some original workbenches, decorative iron brackets, and iron cogs and levers for operating the ridge vents remain in situ.
Adjoining the outer face of the east wall is a single-storey and attic, four-bay former gardener's cottage. The external walls are of sandstone rubble, with some whinstone visible, and feature tooled sandstone dressings. Prominent castellated gableheads, rendered margins, and projecting cills are notable. The southeast elevation has a boarded timber door centrally positioned at ground level, with a letterbox fanlight above. A boarded window is on the outer left, with a box dormer above. The remaining two bays to the right have single windows at ground level, with a centred box dormer above. To the southwest elevation, pointed-arched windows are centred on both floors. The northwest rear elevation has various openings in a lean-to addition. A pointed-arched window is centred on the northeast side. Windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes to the front, Y-traceried glazing to the sides, and 4-pane timber attic lights. Modern windows are present at the rear. The roof is of grey slate, with coped apex stacks, a brick ridge stack, and various cans. The interior was refurbished in 1998.
A single-storey ancillary structure, possibly a byre, adjoins the south wall at the western corner. Constructed of heavily pointed sandstone rubble with some red brick dressings, it features prominently castellated gableheads (with a lowered roofline). The southwest elevation has a boarded timber stable door offset to the left of centre, and a single window to the right. The southeast side has a 3-pane window at ground level, with a blocked, pointed-arched opening above it. The northwest side has a blocked opening with a red brick voussoir arch, and a carved sandstone tablet displaying what appears to be the Swinton family coat of arms, with another blocked pointed-arched opening above. The northeast side has a boarded timber door in the outer left bay, with a lean-to addition obscuring the remaining bays to the right. The roof is of grey slate. Internally, the walls are whitewashed rubble, with a blocked opening to the northwest.
