Description
Gore Cottage, located at 47-49 Powdermill Brae in Gorebridge, is a villa built in the mid to later 19th century. It is a single storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan, featuring three bays and a conservatory addition. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, accented with droved and stugged dressings, and has deep overhanging eaves.
The southwest elevation is symmetrical and accessed by a central infilled platt. It includes an advanced gabled porch that breaks the eaves at the center of the principal floor, featuring a chamfered door surround. The entrance has a timber panelled door topped with a two-pane fanlight, and large pane windows are located in the flanking bays. There are also windows in the outer bays of the basement, with timber gates and doors opening to the left and right of the infilled platt.
The southeast elevation is made of snecked sandstone rubble and has an infilled window at the center of the principal floor, along with an infilled door at the center of the basement. The northeast elevation was not visible in 1997. The northwest elevation features a later 20th century flat-roofed timber conservatory addition, which is offset to the left of the basement.
The property is enclosed by a low rubble boundary wall topped with semi-circular coping and cast iron railings, with a decorative cast iron gate at the center. The roof is covered with purple grey slate, has lead ridges, and features cast iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stacks are coped and faced with cement, topped with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1997.
