Description
43 Powdermill Brae is a villa built in the later 19th century, featuring two storeys and an attic with a three-bay rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed from tooled coursed sandstone with polished dressings, and it has long and short droved quoins, a base course, droved dividing band courses, and an eaves course.
The southwest elevation is symmetrical and made of grey sandstone. The principal floor is accessed by a central infilled platt, which has a central pilastered doorpiece with carved consoles that support a projecting hoodmould. There are matching windows in the flanking bays, and bipartite windows in the left and right bays of the basement. A timber boarded door is located on the right return of the infilled platt, and the first floor has regular fenestration.
The southeast elevation features squared and snecked sandstone, with windows at the centre of the principal and first floors, and a two-leaf boarded timber door on the outer right of the basement.
The northeast elevation was not visible in 1997. The northwest elevation also has squared and snecked sandstone, with a window at the centre of both the principal and first floors, and another window to the left of the first floor.
Barley sugar iron railings run along the principal elevation, curving towards the door, and there are four coped sandstone piers that are symmetrically placed. The villa primarily features four-pane timber sash and case windows, although some two-pane timber sash and case windows have been replaced in the basement on the left of the principal floor (southwest elevation) and on the principal floor of the northwest elevation. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring lead ridges, and there are cast iron rainwater goods along with pairs of polished coped wallhead stacks on the northwest and southeast.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
