Description

Dated 1874, with later 20th century additions and alterations, the Harvieston Mains Steading is a quadrangular, courtyard plan steading, originally comprising farm buildings, which has been converted into residential use. The building features two-storey ranges to the southwest and southeast, and single-storey ranges to the northwest and northeast. It is constructed of tooled random rubble with stugged dressings, with polished dressings to the northeast and northwest blocks and the courtyard elevation of the southwest block. Projecting cills and long and short quoins are present.

The northeast elevation is symmetrical, with four bays, a window in each bay grouped to the centre, flanked to the outer left and right by broad sections of blank wall. The northwest elevation is asymmetrical, with nine bays, featuring boarded timber hatches with iron hinges to the central bay and three bays to the left. A gabled bay is advanced to the outer left, with a window to the centre and a small window to the return. A small pane timber door is located in the penultimate bay to the right, flanked by two windows to the left and one window to the right.

The southwest elevation is nearly symmetrical, with a single-storey piend roof jamb and a lean-to addition advanced to the centre, featuring two timber doors and a single window to the return. A tall, corniced circular red brick stack is positioned at the re-entrant angle to the left, accompanied by a window to the bay on the right. A modern glazed door with a window above is centred to the outer right.

The southeast elevation, originally cartshed and granary, is asymmetrical, with five bays. Segmental arched cart arches are present to the three central bays, with chamfered reveals. Windows are located in the three central bays at the first floor. A segmental arched cart arch is incorporated into a single-storey, single-bay, piend roofed addition to the outer right. A gabled bay is advanced to the outer left, featuring a tooled panel that reads “?RD 1874?” set into the gablehead.

The courtyard elevations vary in their design. The southeast elevation is asymmetrical with five bays, featuring a timber door reached by three stone steps to the penultimate bay to the left, and irregular fenestration to the remainder. The southwest elevation is nearly symmetrical with five bays, exhibiting modern glazing and a door in a wide opening to the centre, and regular fenestration to the ground and first floors of the outer bays. The northwest elevation is asymmetrical with eight bays, a modern glazed timber door to the fourth bay from the right, and a modern garage door in each bay to the right, with regular fenestration to the bays to the left. The northeast elevation is asymmetrical with four bays, featuring a modern panelled timber door and glazing to the penultimate bay to the left, regular fenestration to the bays to the right, and a narrow window in the bay to the outer left. A modern glazed door and glazing are present in a wide opening to the centre of the gabled right return.

Modern, single pane pivoting windows are present, along with a variety of small pane windows to the southwest and southeast elevations. Grey slate roofs are topped with lead ridges. Coped rubble and harled ridge stacks have circular cans. A combination of plastic and cast iron rainwater goods are incorporated. The interior was not inspected in 1997.
