Description

These gates and lodges date to approximately 1790 and form part of the Arniston estate. The complex comprises two single-story, single-bay, square-plan pavilions flanking a drive, with gates situated between them. The northeast elevations are faced with coursed, polished ashlar, while the remainder is broached. The construction incorporates a base course, long and short quoins, a polished eaves course, and a blocking course.

The northeast (principal) elevations feature paired pavilions, each with a window set within a round arched recess that has radial spandrels. These recesses are flanked by paired Ionic pilasters, a moulded band course, and a simple frieze with paired paterae in advanced panels above the pilasters. A tablet is centrally positioned on the blocking course, surmounted by a carved elephant (representing the Oliphant family) to the north and a lion (representing the Dundas family) to the south.

The northwest elevation of the north pavilion is blank, with a harled extension to the right. A single window is present, and a porch in the re-entrant angle features an oculus above an infilled doorway. The southwest elevation is asymmetrical, with a later addition projecting forward and a single window off-centre to the left. The southeast elevation is also asymmetrical, incorporating a window to the centre, a corniced architraved doorway with a panelled timber door, and an addition to the outer left with a single window.

The south pavilion's northwest elevation features a window to the centre and a corniced architraved doorway to the right, with a panelled timber door. The southwest elevation has an infilled window within a round arched recess. The southeast elevation is blank, with a low brick lean-to shed adjacent.

Predominantly round arched, 18-pane timber sash and case windows are present throughout. The roofs are flat, and there are coped ashlar wallhead stacks with moulded octagonal cans. Rainwater goods are a mix of cast iron and plastic. The interiors were not inspected in 1997.

The gates and gatepiers, dating to the later 19th century, are located between the pavilions. They consist of a two-leaf carriage gate of wrought iron, flanked by pedestrian gateways, with clustered wrought iron uprights featuring decorative finials that form the gatepiers.

These lodges are believed to be an early type of estate lodge, possibly used for sentry shelter rather than residential accommodation. Historical records suggest an earlier design with a triumphal arch and sphinxes instead of the lion and elephant, which commemorate the marriage of Katherine Oliphant and George Dundas, who purchased the Arniston estate in 1571.
