Description
Lugton Garden House in Dalkeith is a mid to late 19th-century, two-storey house with a first floor that breaks the eaves. It features an asymmetrical gabled design with Tudor details, constructed from bull-faced grey ashlar with polished dressings. The openings have hoodmoulds, and the reveals are moulded with chamfered cills. The ground floor has bipartite windows that are transomed.
The east elevation, which is the principal facade, has three bays. At the center, there is a gabled porch set in a re-entrant angle with an advanced gabled bay to the left. The porch features a hoodmould that is stepped over a shield inscribed with the monogram "BQ." To the right of the porch, there is a small single light window. The fenestration is regularly arranged on both the ground and first floors, with dormer-headed windows in the right and center bays of the first floor.
The south elevation has two bays with regularly disposed fenestration and dormer-headed windows on the first floor. The north elevation includes a window at both the ground and first floors in the gabled bay to the left, along with two single light windows in a slightly recessed lower wing to the right, which is gabled to the west.
On the west elevation, there is a boarded door and a window in the first floor gabled bay to the right, with a lower wing that is advanced to the left. The house features large horizontal-pane glazing patterns in its casement windows, gablet-coped skews, and beak skewputts at the gableheads and dormerheads. It has octagonal grouped ridge stacks and is covered with grey slates, along with some original rainwater goods.
