Description

Tower House, located at 6 Bridge End in Dalkeith, is an early 19th century, two-storey house that forms part of an irregular terrace. It features an octagonal stair tower at the center bay. The building is constructed of random rubble that has been heavily repointed, with a canted window that is rendered and lined, and has ashlar dressings. There are cill courses at both the ground and first floors of the canted windows, and the tower has an eaves cornice.

On the south (North Esk) elevation, there is a painted timber doorpiece with a pediment in the bay to the left of center, though the door itself has been replaced. The tower, which is raised above the eaves and likely dates from 1853, has a stair window to the south with raised margins. Above this window is a sundial featuring the motto "WB" and the date "1745", surrounded by an early 19th century pediment with brackets, which includes an emblem of a hand and numerals. Above the sundial is a shield inscribed with "WB 1853". The eaves cornice is bracketted and features a broken mannered pediment to the south with a ball finial. To the outer right, there is a full-height, flat-roofed canted window. The ground and first floors have regular fenestration.

The west elevation shares a gable with No 8 Bridgend, while the east elevation is adjoined to a lower building, No 4 Bridgend. There is a rubble garden wall running north adjacent to the left of the extended east elevation.

The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in sash and case style. The tower has a conical roof, and there is a modern rooflight on the south side. The building features coped skews that are mutual to the west, as well as coped, rendered, and lined stacks that are mutual to the west, with a gablehead to the east and truncated behind the tower. The roof is covered with grey slates. Additionally, there is a low ashlar coped rubble retaining wall to the south.
