Description
Greenacres is a house dating from after 1932, built in an asymmetrical Arts and Crafts style influenced by the work of William Alexander, a prominent architect. The house is largely harled (roughcast) with ashlar (finely dressed stone) detailing. The base of the house is constructed of randomly placed, variegated rubble stone. A raised course of ashlar stone runs along the eaves, and another provides level sills for the windows.
The south (principal) elevation has three bays. A projecting gable is situated on the left, featuring a canted window on the ground floor shielded by a deep parapet with a wavy central section. Above this is a window set within a recessed semicircular panel that is blinded (appears as an arch but is not open). A narrow slit window and ashlar detailing are in the gable apex. A doorway is located on the right return, with a window above. A recessed porch at the centre of the ground floor contains a window, with another window above it at the first floor. A tripartite window (three windows divided by mullions) is set within a rectangular projection on the right, with a half-piend (sloping) slate roof and a window above it on the first floor.
The west (entrance) elevation also has three bays. A prominent panel with a sawtooth coping sits centrally, containing a doorcase with an ovolo-moulded architrave and an ogeed (rounded) lintel. Long and short quoins (cornerstones) are present, with unusually shaped tails. A small window is positioned above the doorcase on the first floor. To the left, a window is set at both ground and first floor levels. The first floor is jettied (projects out) on a corbelled (stepped) course, and the angle at the ground floor is chamfered (angled) and corbelled to form a square before the first floor. A bay to the right has an asymmetrical gable, with windows at ground and first floor levels, and a slit window and ashlar detailing in the apex. An offset, asymmetrical, shouldered, and coped chimney-breast is situated between the central and right bays.
The north elevation features a semicircular-arched stair window which breaks through the eaves in a gabled bay at the centre. A small window is located to the left at ground level. A piended (side sloping) bay to the right has two windows at ground level and one window on the first floor. A flat-roofed single-storey wing is adjoined to the left, with a doorway to the west and another to the north, and a window at first floor level. An offset chimney-breast is located to the left.
The east elevation consists of three bays. A bay to the left is asymmetrically gabled, the windows sit to the left, with a slit window and ashlar detailing in the apex. Windows are present at ground and first floor in the central and right bays. An offset, asymmetrical, shouldered and coped chimney-breast is located between the central and left bays. A lean-to glasshouse is attached at ground level. A bipartite window is present in the single-storey wing to the right.
The windows throughout the house are sash and case, with small panes of glass. The steeply pitched roof is covered in grey slates with swept eaves. Coped wallhead stacks (decorative chimneys) are present on the west, north, and east sides.
