Description
The Neuk is a house dating from the later 18th century, with subsequent additions in the early 19th century, forming a two-storey, L-shaped end house situated within an irregular terrace, likely the result of combining two or three former dwellings. The exterior is constructed of random rubble, now pointed with harl, with the east gable and the north elevation being harled and painted. Painted margins define the window openings.
The western elevation features a corniced and pilastered ashlar doorpiece centrally located, housing a flush-panelled door and a fanlight with a bordered glazing pattern. A window is positioned at ground and first floor levels in a bay to the left, with another window at first floor to the right. A wall-mounted two-faced sundial, inscribed "17 WC 59", is mounted at the southwest angle at the level of the first-floor cill.
The north elevation, which fronts onto the North Esk, shares a mutual gable with number 4 Bridgend (listed separately). It features windows irregularly placed at ground and first floor levels. An iron ventilator grille is present at ground floor level.
The south, or advanced, elevation incorporates a gabled, two-bay wing to the left, and a later two-storey, single-bay lean-to addition joined to the right, with a common eaves line. The fenestration is regularly disposed, with the bay to the right being lower in height.
The east elevation includes an early 19th-century lean-to addition to the left. This addition features a door and flanking window to the right, a large stair window at the centre, and a small window at first floor level under the eaves to the right. A two-bay harled gable of the corner block is situated to the right, and it exhibits regularly disposed windows of varying sizes.
The north elevation consists of four bays. A door is located in the bay to the left. Two windows are positioned in the bays to the left of centre at the first floor, extending beyond the eaves with cat-slide roofs. A harled wall runs northwards between the windows. A rubble buttress is situated in the bay to the right of centre, and a small window is found at first floor level in the bay furthest to the right.
The building incorporates a variety of glazing patterns in predominantly sash and case windows; plate glass is used on the west and south elevations, while the east and north elevations feature small panes. Coped skewes are visible on the south and east gableheads. Various stacks are present, including a mutual rubble and brick stack to the west, a rendered ridge stack to the main roof, a rendered stack to the south gablehead, a harled stack to the east gablehead, and a rubble wallhead stack to the left of the lean-to addition. Thackstanes are situated on the gablehead stacks. Grey slates cover the steeply pitched roofs of the original houses, and some original rainwater goods remain.
An outbuilding stands to the east: this is a two-storey structure with a piend roof and rubble construction, featuring wooden lintels to a carriage entrance on the right and a door to the left on the west elevation; above the door is a fixed four-pane window.
