Description
The Old Parsonage, located at 19 Lugton Brae in Dalkeith, is an early 19th-century house that was expanded in size during the mid-19th century, around 1843 to 1852. This two-storey, asymmetrical gabled house is constructed from stugged squared and snecked rubble, with the north and east elevations finished in painted harl and featuring ashlar dressings. The building has painted margins on the north side and crowstepped gables, with a base course on the south elevation.
On the north elevation facing Lugton Brae, there are nine asymmetric bays arranged in a 5-1-3 pattern. The penultimate bay on the right features a pilastered and corniced tripartite doorpiece with a panelled door and a three-pane fanlight above, along with a window on the first floor. To the right of this bay, there is a window at both the ground and first floor, with a small window flanking to the right at ground level and in the centre bay. Additional windows are located at the ground level in the outer left and right bays, as well as in the second bay to the left of centre. First-floor windows are found in the bay to the left of centre, in the penultimate bay to the left, and in the second bay to the right of centre.
The south elevation features an L-plan addition on the left, with a three-bay single-storey earlier wing slightly recessed to the right. In the three bays to the left, there is a tripartite garden door in an advanced and raised gabled bay to the right, along with a first-floor window. The fenestration in the left and centre bays is regularly disposed, with moulded dormerheads above the first-floor windows.
The wing to the right has a gabled bay on the outer right and also features regularly disposed fenestration. The west elevation includes a window at both the ground and first floor in the advanced gabled mid-century bay to the right, a tripartite window at the centre at ground level, and additional windows to the left and right at the first floor in a less steeply pitched gabled bay to the left. There is a rubble wall adjoining to the left, which includes a garden door.
On the east elevation, there is a gable to the right, a flush panelled door with a three-pane fanlight to the left, and windows to the left and right of centre at ground level. A single-storey wing is located to the left, featuring a door to the left and a window to the right, along with a piended dormer window at the centre.
The house features small-pane glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, predominantly with 12 panes. Coped ashlar stacks are present at the gablehead, ridge, and wallhead, and the roof is covered with grey slates. Some original rainwater goods are still in place.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls made of a semicircular coped tall rubble wall, which includes two pyramidal-capped square gatepiers.
