Lade Cottage, 22 Ironmills Road, Dalkeith

Lade Cottage is an early 19th century traditional house that may incorporate earlier elements. It is an asymmetrical, two-storey, three-bay rectangular building with a single-storey wing to the southwest and a single-storey and attic extension added to the rear in the late 1980s. The exterior features coursed rubble with brick on the rear northwest of the single-storey wing, and dressed margins around the openings. The house has a pitched roof with raised ashlar skews and gable apex stacks, while the single-storey wing has a piended roof and the rear extension has a mansard roof, all covered with red pantiles. The main entrance on the southeast elevation is offset to the right, with a small window above it. The outer bays have regular fenestration on both the ground and first floors, while the other elevations show irregular fenestration. A modern conservatory occupies the entire ground floor at the rear. There is a small flight hole with a landing ledge set within the southwest gable. The principal elevation features a modern door and 12-pane timber sash and case replacement windows, with modern windows and doors present elsewhere.

Inside, the cottage was completely modernised during the refurbishment in the late 1980s.
