Description
16, 18 and 20 High Street in Tain is a building designed by A. Maitland and Sons in 1897, showcasing French Renaissance details. This three-storey structure features three bays, serving as shops with a dwelling above. The exterior is finished in tooled ashlar with ashlar dressings.
The central doors are topped by a boldly consoled entablature that supports a blind balcony on the first floor. The ground floor retains its original flanking shop fronts, and there is a cornice above. The first floor windows are highlighted by a moulded cill band and consist of three pilastered bays, with paired segmental-headed windows in the wide outer bays and a single window in the center, all featuring original glazing.
Above the first floor, there is a decorative frieze and cornice, while the second floor has three mullioned and transomed windows that rise through the eaves, adorned with pedimented heads and elaborate detailing at the center. The building is capped with heavy outer ball finials, corniced end stacks, and has a slate roof.
