Description
The Clydesdale Bank on Market Street in Tain was built by Maitland and Sons in 1878. It features tooled ashlar stone with polished ashlar dressings. The building is single-storey and has three pilastered bays. The central bay contains a round-headed door with a hoodmould and a crest above it. On either side of the door are round-headed windows with keystones and architraves. The two side bays also have similar window detailing. The main cornice and balustrade extend across the gables, and there are ornate end stacks that are corbelled at the gables. The roof is piended and covered with slate, topped with ornate cast-iron ridge cresting. There is a low retaining wall with cast-iron spearhead railings, along with gate posts and a pedestrian gate. Inside, the bank features a coved and coffered ceiling.
