Description

109 Queensberry Street in Dumfries is a building dating from around 1880. It is a three-storey, three-bay framed structure, with four additional slightly simpler bays added to the south around 1900. The original building features shops on the ground floor and has a French pavilion roof, although the brattishing has been removed. It is constructed of red ashlar stone, with jambs and mullions that are either pilastered or adorned with foliated capitals. The bays are separated by pilaster strips. The first floor has round-headed bipartite windows, while the other openings are square-headed, including tripartite windows on the second floor. Horizontal strings or courses divide the floors, and there is a main cornice with a stone parapet that has a central crest featuring the letter "S". The outer bays have a cast-iron parapet, and decorative finials sit above the pilaster strips. The building has end stacks and a slate roof. The later addition includes a wide timber fascia above the ground floor and an unattractive mansard roof.
