Description

The Bank Offices on High Street in Tain were built in 1828 and feature three storeys and an attic, arranged in an L shape with four bays facing the street and a wide advanced west bay. The ground floor is rusticated, while the upper levels are finished in polished ashlar, with polished ashlar dressings and long and short detailing. To the right of the advanced west bay, there is a pilastered doorpiece, and to the left, a blocked doorway with a central window. The centre of three recessed bays contains a round arched window that was formerly a door. The first and second floor windows have moulded cill bands, with tripartite windows on the first floor except for the centre recessed bay. The second floor has four windows, and there are three slightly later piended dormers with two-pane glazing. An unusual blocked eaves cornice is present, and the centre block of the recessed bay is dated. The building has broad end stacks and a slate roof.

There is a slightly later addition on the Bank Street gable, which also has three storeys and three bays. This part features a rubble front facing Bank Street, with harled flanks and ashlar dressings. The first floor outer bay has tripartite windows linked by a lintel band, and there are three piended dormers that rise through the eaves, along with an end stack and a slate roof.

The property is complemented by a pair of square ashlar gate piers with moulded cornices and plain caps, coursed rubble walls, and a pair of cast-iron gates designed with spearheads.
