Description
The stable at Meadowbank, located at 14 Academy Street in Fortrose, dates from around 1800. It is a two-storey building with a dormerless attic and features five bays, with a central door flanked by a later 19th-century square-plan porch that has a parapet and pilasters. The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar, with yellowish ashlar dressings and a porch made of grey ashlar. The gables and rear are harled, and it has a moulded eaves cornice along with decorated scrolled skewputts. The windows are 12-pane sashes, with the central first-floor front window being blind but glazed.
At the rear, there is an original circular stair tower topped with a curved piended roof, which is encased in a late 19th-century gabled wing. The roof is covered with West Highland slate. There is also a modern single-storey addition on the east side.
In the garden, there are two single-storey ranges, one serving as a stable and the other as a cottage facing Academy Street, which has been altered for garage use. The garden is enclosed by high rubble walls, with red ashlar square gate piers that have a fluted band course below a moulded square cope. The entrance features cast iron gates and flanking railings with spearheads and urns mounted on a low wall.
