Description

The stables at Springfield House on Dalintober High Street in Campbeltown date from around 1820. This single-storey building with an attic features a symmetrical classical villa design with three bays over a raised basement. The street-facing elevation is made of sandstone ashlar, with quoins and some droved dressings. There is an ashlar gutter at the base, band courses at the principal and first floors, and a cornice with a blocking course above. The pilaster quoins are topped with urn finials, and there is a central columned doorpiece at the principal floor, accessed by a 15-step stair that oversails the basement. The columns have capitals and bases, and the cornice is detailed around the entablature and blocking course, with a tablet featuring swag carving and an urn finial. Tripartite windows with columnar mullions flank the entrance.

The windows are primarily timber sash and case, mostly small-pane, with four panes and plate glass sidelights for the tripartite windows, while the east dormer has plate glass.

The former stable building is a four-bay, single-storey structure made of random rubble.

Flanking the entrance are gatepiers made of droved and painted ashlar, which are square and corniced with pyramidal caps. A rendered and lined dwarf wall runs along the High Street, ending with a retaining wall to the west and a yard wall to the east. There are also symmetrically displaced flanking gateways for vehicular access, which lead to rubble walls on both the east and west sides of the house. The gatepiers at these entrances are stugged sandstone squares with heavy caps.
