Description

The stables at Newbyth date from the later 18th century and form a substantial two-storey quadrangular classical stable court that has been converted into housing. The building is constructed of random rubble with grey ashlar dressings.

The north elevation is symmetrical, featuring a wide pedimented raised ashlar entrance bay. This bay includes a depressed arched carriageway flanked by paired pilasters, along with a raised base course, moulded impost course, frieze, cornice, and pediment. There are three window bays on each side, which have blinded windows.

On the south elevation, there is a superimposed pedimented ashlar three-bay centerpiece with pilasters. This section also has a raised base course, frieze, cornice, and pediment. The tall ground floor windows have a doorway inserted at the center, while there are small windows on the first floor. There are two widely spaced window bays on either side.

The east elevation features eleven bays with regularly placed windows, some of which are blind. There are doors and additional openings that have been inserted, and the two outer bays on the left and right are raised with piend-roofs.

The west elevation has irregular openings at the center with widely spaced blind windows above. The outer bays are detailed similarly to the east elevation, with a doorway inserted on the right.

The courtyard is roughly cobbled and accessed through an ashlar barrel vaulted pend. It has irregular openings and is currently undergoing further residential conversion as of 1987. The first-floor windows break the eaves at intervals in flat-roofed and piended dormerheads. The sash and case windows feature a small-pane glazing pattern, and the building has slate piend-roofs, with ashlar wallhead and ridge stacks.
