Description

East Lodge at Newbyth House is a single-storey gate lodge built in 1832, likely designed by William Burn, in a Tudor style. The building features stugged Cullaloe ashlar and snecked rubble with chamfered arrises and a raised base course. It has a corbelled crenellated parapet.

On the north elevation, there is an advanced gabled bay to the left, which includes a rectangular crenellated former porch set in a re-entrant angle to the right. The segmentally arched doorway is now blocked and has been converted into a window with a moulded surround. A similarly detailed segmental arch can be found on the west return. The left gable has a canted four-light window with a blocking course.

The east elevation features a raised gable bay to the right with a hoodmoulded tripartite window, and a single window is located in the left bay. The west elevation has an advanced broad gable with a raised set-off stack at the center and a single light to the right. There is also a lean-to stone outbuilding with a modern window added in the re-entrant to the right.

The south elevation includes an original low gabled projection at the center, with a gabled bay to the right that has a projecting modern addition. The sash and case windows have horizontal-pane glazing. The gablet skews, ball finials, and blind arrow slits are present in the gable heads. The stacks are rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, and the roof is covered with grey slates. Decorative angle gutter heads are retained.

Surrounding the lodge are quadrants and gatepiers, which consist of coped ashlar parapet walls with a stone balustrade above, forming the quadrants. Four square ashlar corniced gatepiers flank the central drive and pedestrian gates.
