Description

Preston Mill is an 18th century watermill and kiln, which may include elements of an earlier structure, along with later additions. The mill features a single-storey outbuilding that encloses a yard, constructed from random whinstone rubble with rough dressings, some of which have been renewed in brick.

The single-storey mill building has walls raised to create space for a milling floor and loft. On the west elevation, there is an entrance to the left with a timber surround around the door, and a small window to the outer right. A door leads to the loft above, which is accessed through a tiled and slated swept dormer, with an additional modern slated dormer to the right.

An undershot wheel is located on the south gable, positioned right of centre, with a small opening above it and sandstone facing behind the wheel. Access to the kiln is provided by a wooden bridge from the loft doorway in the north gable.

Inside, the mill contains functional elevators and hoppers, a shelling stone, and a grinding stone, with machinery dating from the 1930s. The roof is covered with red pantiles.

Adjoining to the northwest is a circular brick-lined kiln, with access to the kiln floor at ground level via a stone porch to the north. A stone forestair leads to the drying floor, with a doorway that breaks the eaves in a swept dormer. The drying platform is made of perforated iron tiles. There is a similar doorway to the left that connects to the wooden bridge to the mill. Lean-to additions are present at the rear, and the conical roof features red pantiles with a renewed cowl.

To the east, there is a two-storey mill cottage and stable that now accommodates an exhibition and shop.
