Description

The garden walls and sundials at Smeaton House date from the later 18th century. These extensive random rubble walls measure approximately 200 by 70 meters and were formerly lime-washed, enclosing three adjoining square gardens. Each wall features doorways. The area now accommodates a nursery with modern greenhouses.

There are two detached sundials, likely relocated, situated to the southeast. One is a horizontal dial dated 1690, while the other is an undated horizontal octagonal dial mounted on an octagonal pedestal, which has cup hollows below with dials and gnomons.
