Description

The East Range of Smeaton House is a mid to late 18th century granary with adjoining two-storey cottages, forming the eastern range of a U-shaped farmstead. The building has undergone significant alterations over time. It is constructed from random whinstone rubble with mixed ashlar dressings and broad droving, with many stones having been renewed.

The granary features cart openings, which may have been raised in the early 19th century to create a loft space. The cart arch on the outer left is now covered by a modern door. There are windows flanking the granary; a single bay to the left and two bays to the right, which are now blocked. The loft above the granary has three small openings that are also blocked. A change in the masonry at the quoins indicates a possible raising of the structure.

The south gable includes a cart arch and two pitching holes above, both of which are now blocked, along with an additional pitching hole for the loft. At the rear, there is a loading doorway that has been raised between floors, flanked by smaller openings, and three windows to the loft that are now blocked.

Adjoining to the left is a lower range with two doorways and a window on the ground floor, as well as a large modern sliding door at the rear. The range continues to the north, featuring two two-storey farm cottages with significantly altered openings and various types of glazing. The roofs of the cartshed, granary, and cottages are covered with grey slates, while the middle range has a corrugated iron roof. The building has straight skews and a brick stack on the cottages.
