Description
Braefoot is a house built in the later 19th century, with extensions added later in the 19th century, creating a near L-shaped villa. It is situated on High Street, Campbeltown. The main part of the house has two storeys and an attic, and is asymmetrical in design, featuring classical details.
The front (south) elevation is three bays wide, including a recessed entrance bay on the right that reveals the end of an older section of the building. The recessed entrance is fronted by a porch with a substantial entablature, a corner column, and matching pilasters, concealing a pair of six-panel, two-leaf timber doors with an etched glass panel at the top of the inner door. A stone platform provides access to the entrance. Above the entrance is a round-arched window with a shouldered architrave. Bipartite windows are located at ground and first floor levels in the outer left bay.
The east elevation also has three bays, including a blank recessed bay with the entrance porch on the left. The remaining bays are evenly fenestrated. The west elevation presents a gable end with two fireplace openings on each floor, and a smaller window with a margin at first floor level in the centre of the gable. The rear (north) elevation has three bays, with a projecting, two-storey wing with a piend roof extending from the centre.
The house is rendered with lined walls, with droved ashlar dressings to the south front, stugged ashlar dressings to the later building work, and random rubble to the west gable and rear. The windows on the south elevation are timber sash and case windows with plate glass, while those on the east elevation are four-pane, except for a six-pane window on the ground floor left. The rear elevation has six-pane timber sash and case windows, and the rear wing features border-glazed fixed lights. The roof is grey slate, with a piend shape to the south and east sides, and a platform. A slate-hung dormer with a bipartite plate glass window projects from the east roof slope. Rooflights with six and two panes are set into the rear roof slope. Decorative brattishing runs along the main ridges and porch. Ornate cast-iron gutters are present on the principal frontages. The chimneys are of stugged ashlar, panelled and corniced, with mainly octagonal cans. There are two-flue wallhead stacks on the east front entrance bay and a central bay on the rear elevation to the left, plus a ten-flue apex stack on the west gable.
The interior was not inspected in 1995.
Boundary walls run along the High Street, constructed of random rubble with an ashlar coping stone, surmounted by cast-iron railing with finials. A cast-iron gate and piers previously stood to the right, but have been removed. A stepped east boundary wall is topped with an ashlar coping, while the west boundary wall supports a range of single-storey lean-to outhouses with grey slate roofs and brick chimneys.
