Description

The stables at Clerkington House date from the later 18th century and include some later additions. This symmetrical group features a classical facade surrounding a quadrangle. It consists of two wings that are two storeys high, with the western wing in a ruinous state, linked by a curtain wall to the north and a lower range to the south. The structure is primarily built of harled rubble with an arch made of ashlar.

The northeast elevation presents a symmetrical screen wall that encloses the courtyard. At the center, there is a tall round carriage arch in the Ionic order, complete with an architrave, frieze, and cornice, and rustic bands on the pilasters. On either side of the arch, the curtain walls each have two dummy windows and connect to the wings, which feature recessed arches with dummy Venetian windows. A cavetto cornice and blocking course run along the top.

The east wing mirrors the east elevation and is essentially three bays wide, with the central bay advanced and topped with a pediment. It has a cavetto cornice and blocking course, with dummy Venetian windows on the ground floor and plain windows on the first floor. The west elevation has two arched doorways at the center, which serve as garages, flanked by house doorways, with two small windows on the ground floor and four windows on the first floor, creating an asymmetrical appearance.

The west wing is in a state of ruin and is roofless. It has a symmetrical five-bay west elevation, with a blind doorway and window in each bay, and the central bay is advanced and pedimented. The east elevation consists of six bays, with most openings at the ground and first floors being empty or blind.

The south range is in poor condition and is a single-storey structure that is plain and irregular, centered by a square two-storey block topped with an octagonal water tower featuring Doric pilasters. Lean-to structures are present at the rear.

Few windows remain, but the original design likely featured small-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are piended and slated where they still exist.

To the west of the stables, there is a large walled garden that encloses approximately two acres. The walls are made of random rubble with a flat ashlar coping and reach up to 10 feet high. There is a doorway in the north wall, along with a lean-to stone shed on the northeast wall with a corrugated iron roof, and a brick shed featuring arches. The garden is also in poor condition.
