Description
Flowerburn Cottage, located at 12 High Street in Fortrose, dates from around 1838. It is constructed of rubble and features a single storey, a basement, and an attic, with a three-bay façade. The central bay, which is slightly advanced, has an ashlar finish and is topped with a parapet. The entrance consists of an architraved door that is accessed by a flight of steps with cast-iron balusters. The ground floor windows are tripartite in the outer bays.
An addition, designed by Ross & Macbeth in 1887, is a single-storey and attic structure with a slightly advanced piend roof at the east gable. In 1977, large swept dormers replaced the original piended dormers on the main block. The 1887 addition extends northward to Academy Street, where a courtyard at the rear is enclosed from the street by a high wall. The roofs are slated, and there is modern glazing in the ground floor windows at the garden front, along with modern roof lights on both roof slopes.
