Description

The stables at Geilston House in Cardross date from the early 19th century and were restored in the early 20th century. This single-storey and attic L-plan building is cement-rendered.

On the south elevation, the structure features a single-storey and attic rectangular-plan cottage with three closely spaced bays arranged symmetrically and a fourth blank bay on the outer right. There is a bell-cast gabled porch at the center with a boarded door and flanking windows. Gabled dormerheads are symmetrically placed above, with a plate glass rooflight at the center. The right return gable has a segmental-headed arch that is blocked as a door, featuring a sandstone voussoir and surround with a keystone. A link block on the left connects to a long rectangular-plan block.

The east elevation has seven bays, with cement render and pink sandstone margins. There is a segmental-headed arch, now blocked with a boarded door, on the outer right, and a window to the left. A narrow piend-roofed porch with small windows is also on the left. The three outer left bays are nearly symmetrically arranged, with margined boarded doors, and there is a gabled, slate-hung hoist door at the center. A broad garage door is located on the left return.

The building has a graded grey slate bellcast roof with ashlar skews and moulded skewputts for the cottage, while the outer range has a piend-roofed slate roof with lead flashings. The windows are 12-pane sash and case.

Attached to the west is a rectangular-plan storage and piggery block made of rubble with droved red sandstone margins and a corrugated-iron roof.

To the west of the stables, there is a large vegetable garden enclosed by hedges.
