Description

The Garden Pavilion at The Deanery, located at 19 Academy Street in Fortrose, dates from the mid-18th century, with an early 19th century wing at the rear. The original block is harled with ashlar dressings and consists of two storeys and an attic, featuring a five-bay front with a central door that now has a modern crenellated porch. The outer windows are paired, while the centre first-floor window is round-arched and contains Gothick glazing. There are three later piended dormers and crowstepped gables.

The rear wing is a tall single-storey structure with a basement and attic, reaching the full height of the original block. It has three bays, tall ground floor windows, a ground floor cill course, and rusticated quoins at the windows and gable, along with an eaves course and two piended dormers. The roofs are slated, and the glazing pattern consists of 12 panes.

The garden pavilion itself is a mid-18th century structure, also harled with ashlar dressings. It is single storey with a three-bay front that has a central door flanked by bullseye windows. The roof is piended and slated, with ball finials at the angles of the front.

The gatepiers, dating from the early 19th century, are made of ashlar and have a square plan with panelled faces, cornices, and ball finials. The entrance features cast-iron gates with spearhead uprights, and there are rough ashlar dwarf walls with spearhead railings.
