Description
Oaklands House, located at 31 Sherbrooke Avenue in Pollokshields, Glasgow, was designed by J MacKellar in 1902. This large, asymmetrical villa features one, two, and three storeys and has an unusual design that includes a dummy tower house at the south end, which has corbelled parapets enclosing a gabled timber attic storey. At the north end, there is a gabled range connected by a low linking range. A castellated, deeply projecting, bow-ended porch extends west from this linking range, while an ingle-neuk gable is present at the east end of the north flank. The exterior is constructed of stugged and snecked ashlar with polished dressings and red-tile roofs, complemented by tall stacks and paired polygonal flues at the tower.
Inside, the original ornamental features are well-preserved, including a timber gallery over the entrance hall, leaded glass windows, intricate ceiling plasterwork, and detailed timberwork and chimney pieces. The boundary walls are made of snecked ashlar, with a gateway at the junction of Sherbrooke and Springkell Avenues, featuring corniced square gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps and depressed-arched flanking pedestrian gates. Additionally, there is a detached outbuilding to the east, which is part of the original design and is now used as a domestic flat.
