Description

110 Springkell Avenue is a large villa built between 1902 and 1903 by J Nisbet, situated on a slope that overlooks Springkell Avenue. The architectural style of the villa combines elements of Scots baronial and English Queen Anne. It is mainly two storeys high with attics and features an asymmetrical design. The ground floor is constructed of stugged and snecked red ashlar, while the upper floor is white-rendered, with polished ashlar dressings that create a contrast at the first floor. The building has blocked deep cornices and red-tiled roofs, with a variety of window styles including single, mullioned, and transomed windows, as well as casements, predominantly featuring small leaded panes.

Prominent architectural features include an off-centre curved bay topped with a swept-eaved steep conical roof, a recessed bay to the left that jetties above a curved ground floor window, and an open-pedimented steep gable above with a small attic light. The chimney stacks have grouped diamond flues, with the tops made of white-rendered red ashlar. The rooflines are complex, adding to the villa's character. The boundary wall is also made of red ashlar, with channelled piers.

Inside, the villa is handsome, with well-detailed public rooms on the ground floor that feature decorative friezes and chimney-pieces. One room to the west is L-shaped with an ingle-neuk; although the chimney-piece has been removed, the surviving overmantel contains a tapestry by Ann MacBeth. The interior includes oak timber panelling and a staircase, along with much leaded glass, including small figurative panels, although some panels have been removed. The light fittings exhibit art nouveau detailing.
