Description
Matheran is a large, asymmetrical Scots baronial villa located at 27 and 29 Sherbrooke Avenue in Glasgow, designed by Burnet Boston and Carruthers and dated 1903. The villa is constructed of rock-faced red ashlar and features roll-mouldings, balustrades, corbelling, and numerous cross-windows with plate glass sashes. It has turreted corner bays and a low billiards room to the north. The west flank includes an open porch with open-topped bartizans and corbels. The south garden elevation has advanced and recessed elements, with an octagonal turret on the left and a dummy tower house on the right. Steps lead to a door set in the chamfered angle of an off-centre bay, and there is a service court to the east on a lower slope. The villa is topped with slate roofs.
Inside, there is an open hall featuring decorative plasterwork above the fireplace and a balcony overlooking the first-floor hallway. The interior is richly adorned with timber panelling, mostly oak, and includes leaded glass panels, including two large north-facing mullioned and transomed windows.
Additionally, there is a gateway located at the corner of Sherbrooke Avenue and Springkell Avenue, also made of rock-faced red ashlar and featuring Scots baronial detailing, along with stepped boundary walls surrounding the garden.
