Description
Hughenden House, located at 25 Hughenden Road in Glasgow, is a 3-bay villa designed by architects Burnet, Boston and Carruthers in 1907. The building is two storeys high with a basement and is constructed from polished ashlar that has been stone cleaned.
The entrance features steps that oversail the basement, leading to a wide doorpiece supported by consoles and topped with a curvilinear hood. The outer door is a double-leaf panelled design, while the vestibule door is tripartite with pilastered jambs, sidelights, and a fanlight, all adorned with elaborate art nouveau leaded coloured glass. Flanking the door are full height, 4-light canted windows with angled mullions at the ground floor, which are pilastered and lintelled, while the first floor cill is incised. Above the door is a single light window. The villa includes sash windows with lower sashes of plate glass and upper sashes featuring art nouveau leaded glass. The eaves are accented with a band and cornice, and there are corniced end stacks with slate roofs.
The entire house is situated on a raised platform with a terraced garden. A tall flight of steps leads to the entrance, flanked by a coursed ashlar retaining wall that supports cast-iron railings with intermediate square ashlar piers. There are also a pair of tall square ashlar gatepiers with a dentil course and domical copes, along with a low ashlar boundary wall.
Inside, the villa boasts a good art nouveau interior with well-preserved leaded glass in most windows. It retains much of its original woodwork, including fitted bookcases, panelling, and chimney pieces. The drawing room features delicate plasterwork, and there is a large stair window designed by E A Taylor.
