Description

H and D Barclay, architects; circa 1881. Terrace of 3-bay

houses, truncated at S. 2 storeys attic and basement.

Polished ashlar, partly stonecleaned.

Each house with steps oversailing basement to fluted Ionic

balustraded doorpiece, recessed double-leaf panelled doors.

Vestibule doors tripartite with glazed side and fanlights.

Flanking door, single storey projecting windows; square to

right, canted to left. 1st floor windows architraved and

mullioned; outer tripartite, central bipartite. Sash windows,

plate glass glazing. Continuous cornice over ground, lintel

string at 1st floor. Plain eaves cornice; deep plain parapet.

Bipartite dormers alternately round-headed or piended. Modern

box dormers at Nos 1 and 2. Slate mansard roofs, corniced

axial stacks; plain skews at party walls. Rear elevations

coursed ashlar, various dormer shapes.

Interior: Corinthian column screen to hall, wood panelled

dado with decorative plaster moulding above. Good carved

timber door cases (eg No 4) and chimney pieces, elaborate

cornice and ceiling rose plasterwork to main rooms.

Coped ashlar retaining wall to steps and front gardens,

latter with square incised ashlar piers marking boundary

walls.

To rear of terrace, stugged ashlar boundary walls; mews

cottages at Nos 5 and 6 Montague Lane. Single-storey and

attic stugged ashlar cottages; No 6 modernised and altered,

both with corniced axial and wallhead stacks.
