Description
2 Kensington Road in Glasgow is a terrace of houses designed by architect David Barclay of H & D Barclay, built between 1900 and 1901. The terrace features two 2-bay houses and one 3-bay house, all with two storeys, an attic, and a basement. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar, with the basement being stugged.
On the left side, steps lead down to a double-leaf panelled door that is topped with an oculus fanlight and flanked by glazed sidelights. This door is set within tripartite doorpieces that have polished granite dwarf pilasters and colonnettes, supporting a heavy cornice that arches over the oculus, complete with a bold keystone. To the right, and mirrored on the left at No 8, is a 5-light bow window that extends from the basement to a 3-light bow dormer featuring a conical slate roof. Above the doorpiece, there is a bipartite window. The sash windows throughout have plate glass glazing, with most upper sashes adorned with decorative leaded panes.
A band course runs along the eaves, which are supported by timber brackets that allow for widely overhanging eaves. The dormers alternate between bow and bipartite designs. The roofs are pitched and platformed, covered with slate, and feature ceramic cresting and skews, along with corniced axial stacks.
At the front, there is a solid ashlar parapet leading to the steps, and a low ashlar boundary wall encloses the gardens. The rear elevation is also stugged ashlar.
