Description

Haywood, located at 6 Queen Street in Helensburgh, is a 2-storey, asymmetrical gabled villa built in 1874, with an early 20th century addition to the rear. The exterior features stugged and snecked cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, while later additions are harled. The building has a base course, overhanging eaves, and ashlar mullions on canted and tripartite windows, which have chamfered arrises.

On the east elevation facing Colquhoun Street, there is a prominent 2-storey square tower at the center, topped with a finialled, heavy pyramidal roof covered in fishscale slates. A dormer window with a decorated pediment breaks the eaves. To the right, there is a semi-circular arched doorway with a 2-leaf panelled door and a timber gabled porch supported by ashlar columns set at an angle. To the left of the tower, there is a gabled bay with a service wing abutting it, featuring a window in the gablehead.

The south elevation, facing the garden, has M-gabled bays. The left bay features a canted window with a corniced, piended roof also covered in fishscale slates, while the right bay has a tripartite window. Each bay has a window on the first floor.

On the west side elevation, there is a central window and a taller gabled bay on the far right, which has a bay window at ground level and a glazed door on the return to the left, along with a window in the gablehead. A later bay on the outer right is connected to the original structure by a curved block, featuring small windows at both ground and first floors.

The north rear elevation includes a return of the later block with a central door and a window to the left, along with a small window to the right on the first floor. A gabled bay on the right has a ground window and an oriel window with a slate-hung apron. There is a forestair leading to the door at first floor level on the return to the right. A single-storey service wing abuts the northwest angle.

The service wing has two windows on the south face and three bays on the west face, with a taller gabled bay on the outer right and windows in each bay. There are two windows on the north face and a coal door on the outer right.

Most windows are 4-pane sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate, and there are tall corniced ashlar stacks.

Inside, the drawing room features a timber Adamesque chimneypiece. Additionally, there is a pedestal sundial inscribed 'John Whyte 1883' on the property.
