Description
Galloway Cottage, located at 41 Colquhoun Street in Helensburgh, was likely designed by Alexander Thomson around 1865, with an addition by William Spence in 1877. This single-storey, four-bay villa features Greek Revival details and is constructed from stugged, snecked cream sandstone with ashlar dressings. The building has overhanging bracketed eaves and includes bipartite and tripartite windows that have ashlar pilaster-mullions and lintels adorned with an incised fret pattern.
On the south elevation, the entrance is positioned off-centre to the left and features pilastered reveals with a modern fanlit door. There is a bipartite window to the outer left and an advanced gabled bay to the right of the doorway, which includes a tripartite window. To the outer right is a recessed bay with another bipartite window.
The north elevation has three regular windows and a lower single-storey wing to the outer left, which contains a door in the re-entrant angle. The lower wing is recessed to the right and has a window in the end bay, along with a later lean-to projection at the junction of the two blocks, which has a screen wall linked to an outbuilding and encloses a brick-paved service yard.
The south elevation features plate glass sash and case windows, while the north elevation has 12-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes an ashlar corniced end stack to the left and an ashlar stack at the centre, both with moulded cans.
Inside, there is a corniced hall lobby that is illuminated by a small domed rooflight, along with panelled doors. The original chimneypieces have been removed.
