Glenafton Nursing Home, 50 St Andrew's Drive, Pollokshields, Glasgow

Glenafton Nursing Home, built around 1880, is a large two-storey villa located at a street corner in Pollokshields, Glasgow, showing the influence of architect Alexander Thomson. The villa features two front elevations and an arched open porch, which is inspired by Thomson's design for "the Knowe," situated in the re-entrant angle closest to the main driveway entrance. The building has an asymmetrical design with a shallow out-set near the eaves, positioned above the capitals of pilasters that are recessed in the window jambs.

The exterior is finished with stone-cleaned stugged and snecked ashlar, complemented by polished dressings and some sculptured or incised ornamentation. The elevation facing St Andrew's Drive has two bays, with a canted ground floor window on the left and a similar window facing Maxwell Drive. There is also a tall stair window featuring leaded glass panels. The villa has deep bracketed eaves and wide dormers on each front, with the eaves cut back on the St Andrew's Drive elevation. Original fret-worked brackets can be seen on the Maxwell Road side. The windows are fitted with plate glass sashes, and the building has chimney stacks and slated platform roofs.

To the west, there are outbuildings and an iron-railed courtyard wall. The boundary wall steps down to the street and features an unusual main gateway, with wide piers that are elaborate, distinctive, and sculptured.
