Description
Arran View is a Greek Revival villa designed by Alexander Thomson and built in 1868. It is a two-story building with an irregular plan, originally comprising five bays. The villa is constructed from red ashlar sandstone. It features two gable ends, each with projecting temple-fronted forms, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and a three-stage tower with a broad, pyramidal roof. A base course runs around the building. Tall, rectangular windows are a prominent feature.
The east (principal) elevation has four bays. A broad, gabled bay projects from the outer right side, featuring three windows on the ground floor. A string course separates the ground and first floors. The first floor contains a five-light window with pilastered stone mullions, and a single window to the left return. A slightly advanced gabled bay is located to the right of the centre, with two windows on the ground floor and a three-light window on the first floor, also with pilastered stone mullions. A three-stage, square-plan tower is situated to the left of the centre, with a hoodmoulded window on the ground floor. A string course is located between the ground and second stage, and a narrow window is present on the second stage. The third stage is battered, leading to a narrow, three-light window with pilastered stone mullions and a pyramidal roof. A recessed upper storey is to the left of the tower. A single-story porch is located on the ground floor, with stone steps leading to an open porch entrance. The porch is flanked by piers with pilasters decorated with a key pattern at the top. An entablature sits above the porch, continuing a key patterned frieze from the south elevation.
The rear (north) elevation displays irregular fenestration, with a double-gabled bay to the right. The west (side) elevation also has irregular fenestration. The south (side) elevation has regular fenestration to the central bay and an advanced, gabled bay to the left. This bay features a slightly prominent three-light window on the ground floor with stone pilastered mullions, terminating in a full entablature with paterae on the frieze. Above is a five-light window. A single-story, glazed porch is located to the right of the centre, including a pilastered three-light window and an entrance to the right return. An entablature with a gadrooned cornice and a Greek key pattern on the frieze is also present. A blocked parapet features carved acanthus to the outer right corner.
Plate glass sash and case windows are found throughout, with glass set into stone in the towerhead windows. Grey slates are used for the roof, with lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted.
The interior was substantially lost and rebuilt in 1986 after fire damage and is now divided into six one- or two-bedroom apartments. An original mosaic floor remains in the vestibule, incorporating a key-patterned border to the porch.
The property is approached via a pair of square-plan concrete gate piers. Each pier has an inscribed base reading 'ARRANVIEW', a Greek frieze pattern, and low pyramidal caps.
