Description

29 and 31 Main Road in East Wemyss is a two-storey and part basement, three-bay, L-plan tenement built around 1930 by architect A Stewart Tod. It features a stylised classical revival design with prominent segmental and triangular pediments and a balustraded porch. The exterior is harled with painted margins and includes band and eaves courses.

On the southeast elevation facing Main Road, the advanced bays to the right have two windows on each floor, topped by a broad segmental pediment that breaks the eaves into a bellcast roof with a stack at the apex. The recessed bay to the left has one window on each floor.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a single bay with a stone porch and a balustraded parapet above a part-glazed timber door at ground level.

The southwest elevation, which faces a memorial garden, also has a single bay with a window on the ground floor and a tablet inscribed with 'NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA' on the first floor, flanked by full-height pilasters and topped with a steep pediment.

On the northwest elevation, there are slightly advanced bays to the left with two windows flanking a smaller window on both the ground and first floors, and an additional window between the floors on the outer left. The outer right bay has one window on each floor.

The building features a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, coutra tiles, and coped harled stacks with a full complement of cans. The skews are ashlar-coped, and the eaves overhang. Decorative cast-iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers are also present.
