Description
The Wemyss Parish Church and War Memorial, located on Main Street, East Wemyss, likely dates to around 1528. It was extended with transeptal north and south aisles in 1659, and a bellcote was added in 1693. The church underwent significant alterations by Robert Burn between 1810 and 1811. A crowstepped hall was constructed to the northeast in 1928. In 1985, the building was converted into a recording studio and a residence.
The building is a cruciform-plan former church, exhibiting a mixture of Gothic and Tudor architectural details. It is harled with ashlar dressings. The church features a round-arched door, traceried windows, blind quatrefoils, hoodmoulds, stone transoms, and mullions. A birdcage bellcote sits atop the structure.
The north elevation has a broad gable with a cross finial, featuring a door and flanking bipartite windows at ground level, and an 8-light transomed and mullioned window above. A lower gable belonging to the hall is positioned on the left side, with a door centered and windows flanking it.
The east elevation displays a projecting single bay chancel with a blocked round-arched door and a 6-light transomed and mullioned window above. Other features include blocked bipartite windows, a moulded panel, a blocked traceried window with two ogee-headed lights, and a stone forestair leading to a loft entrance. A large 4-light transomed and mullioned window, with lower lights blocked, is recessed to the left, and a later hall projects with a wide 4-light window.
The south elevation has a broad gable with a blocked door, flanked by bipartite windows, and an 8-light transomed and mullioned window with a quatrefoil above.
The west elevation has an advanced gable, corbelled over the first stage. It contains a blocked, pointed-arch, traceried window, a birdcage bellcote, and small blocked bipartite windows. Hoodmoulded, 4-light transomed and mullioned windows are present on the flanking recessed faces, with some lower lights blocked.
The windows feature multi-pane leaded glazing, with some upper lights of blocked windows also glazed. The east elevation, in the center and right bays, has modern plate glass glazing. The roof is covered in grey slates, with ashlar-coped skews.
The interior was not inspected in 1998.
Surrounding the building are ashlar-coped rubble boundary walls containing square-section coped harled gatepiers and iron gates with an arch.
