Description
Oriel House, located at 9 Academy Square in Limekilns, is an early 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay house with a two-storey addition on the right. It features white harling with dressed margins and an eaves course. The left bay has a two-storey canted window with a sandstone surround.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is a central door, with a window above it on the first floor, and a ground floor window to the right with another window above it. To the left, there is a later two-storey fenestration bay, and canted bay windows with mullions at each storey. The second floor has three windows. The far right wing has two ground floor windows, a central first floor window with a pediment, and a kneelered dormerhead.
The south elevation is plain, featuring a third floor window on the right. The west elevation was not seen in 1999, while the north elevation has a plain gable.
The house predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows, with six-pane timber windows on the second floor. The pitched roof is covered with grey slate and has raised flat-head skews, with "1817" carved into the end of the left east-facing skew. There are stone gable apex stacks and a gable apex stack on the wing.
The interior was not seen in 1999.
