Description
The King's Cellar, located at 8 Academy Square in Limekilns, is a storehouse dating from the early to mid-16th century, with possible materials from 1362 and later modifications. It is a two-storey building constructed from large sandstone blocks, featuring a central pediment and a forestair. The openings have ashlar surrounds.
On the south elevation, there is a central timber boarded door on the first floor, which has an inserted pediment above that displays a coat of arms and is dated 1581, topped with a ball finial. A forestair leads up to this door. To the right of the door is a ground floor window with a chamfered surround, and a blocked arrowslit is located to the right of this window. To the left of the stairs, there is a pointed-arched window that was formerly a door. Single windows on the first floor flank the door.
The west elevation features a later timber extension from the 20th century. The north elevation is plain and has been partially cut away to the east for a former turnpike stair. The east elevation has a blocked pointed-arched window on the first floor, and the lower half of the north side of the east gable has been cut away for the turnpike. There is a skewputt with a corbel on the upper half of the gable and an advanced corbelled base at the first floor for the former turnpike stair. The turnpike stair is located in the concave northeast angle and has a door on the first floor, with raggles of stairs visible above.
Inside, the ground floor entrance is at the west gable, where steps lead down into a single room with a barrel vault and a plain interior featuring a concrete floor. Blocked openings to the south are visible, including an arched door that is now a window, an arched recess to the right, and two blocked windows to the left of the former door. There is a modern screen wall and door to the east, along with a blocked niche in the east wall to the left. The west end has tongue and groove panelling from a 1912 extension, and a timber staircase leads to the upper level. The pointed-arch doorway to the first floor is at the west gable, leading into a tall single room with a pointed barrel vault. Three rooflights have been inserted into the ceiling on the north side, and there is a covered arched window in the east gable and a covered arched fireplace in the north wall. The advanced curve of the turnpike is in the northeast angle, with a doorway leading to it. The upper level has a replacement timber floor with a raised section to the east.
The building features inserted and replacement windows, including four fixed lower lights and two top-hung upper lights, as well as three rear rooflights. The pitched roof is covered with grey slate laid in diminishing courses, with raised skews and a narrow parapet at the eaves on both the front and rear. A tall stack rises from the rear wallhead.
