Description

Castle House, located at 25 and 27 High Street in Kirkliston, dates back to 1682 and was restored in 1983. This three-bay, three-storey house has a rectangular plan and features a projecting semi-circular stair tower on the north side. The front elevation is rendered and painted, while the other sides have a light render over random rubble. The building has painted quoins and raised, chamfered ashlar margins around the windows.

On the main north elevation, the stair tower is centrally positioned. There is a broad door on the west return with a moulded chamfered surround and a marriage lintel inscribed with "16 IF ID 82," along with an escutcheon above it. The stair tower has two windows that light the turnpike stair, with the upper window being smaller. The flanking bays display regular fenestration on each floor, and the second-floor windows are directly under the eaves.

The west elevation features gabled rubble with lime wash, a narrow window at the left corner, and a blocked window at the second-floor corner on the right. The east elevation has a small window at the first floor and a blocked window above it. The south elevation is made of rubble and has a door at the centre, with regular fenestration. There are low single-storey service additions to the outer bays.

The windows are replacement timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring ashlar coped skews and squared, corniced end stacks.
